Artemis Prostate Technology

Revolutionary Prostate Imaging Technology

At Coastal Carolina Hospital, part of the Hilton Head Regional Healthcare system, we now have a sophisticated way to detect and diagnose prostate cancer using the Artemis – semi-robotic 3D MRI/US fusion-targeted biopsy technology. And, we are just one of two facilities in South Carolina and one of a limited number of facilities in the United States with this technology.

“This is good news for men who may be at risk for prostate cancer,” said Dr. Michael Langley, a board certified urologist at Coastal Carolina Hospital.  “According to the American Cancer Society, one man in seven will get prostate cancer during his lifetime. A more precise diagnosis can lead to a more appropriate treatment plan,”

Why A Biopsy Is Done

If your doctor suspects cancer as a result of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test or an abnormal digital rectal exam, you may need a prostate biopsy.

Today’s prostate biopsy technique uses transrectal ultrasound guidance to biopsy multiple locations in the prostate with the hope of finding the area where the possible cancer may be located. These biopsies are referred to as “blind” because the physician typically cannot see the specific location of any abnormal tissue within the prostate. In some cases, the inaccuracy of these biopsies may result in an overly aggressive treatment of insignificant tumors or missed detection of serious cancers.

The Artemis is designed to offer a more precise method for early detection, diagnosing and monitoring prostate cancer using magnetic resonance images (MRI) along with ultrasound images.

In addition to the Artemis, Coastal Carolina Hospital has an advanced MRI unit featuring Caring Suite Technology that enables you to have a more comfortable procedure.

The Caring MR Suite features:

  • A wide, brightly-lit 70 cm bore, or tunnel, which can help lessen anxiety for patients who tend to be claustrophobic
  • Flexible foam coils that embrace your body and make you more comfortable
  • Feet-first scans, allowing you to maintain eye contact with the technician and eliminating the need to be repositioned during the scan
  • “Silent System” technology is designed to to greatly reduce noise level made during scans
  • Shorter scan times
  • Enhanced image quality so the physician can provide a more accurate diagnosis
  • Scan options for patients with decreased renal function or implants
  • Enhancements such as ambient lighting, video and music to personalize your MR experience.

How Artemis Targeted Biopsy Is Done

3D MRI targeted biopsy combines real-time ultrasound with MRI to create a high –definition image of the prostate in 3D color. First, an MRI exam detects any lesions in the prostate that may be cancerous. The MRI is then fused with live ultrasound imaging during the biopsy procedure. This allows your physician to guide the biopsy needle and target any suspicious areas detected on the MRI. You are sedated during the procedure.

If a diagnosis of prostate cancer is made, this technology can help you and your physician develop an informed and appropriate treatment plan based on a clear understanding of the extent and nature of the disease.
