Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy
Problems with the pelvic floor can cause various symptoms that can be painful, debilitating and embarrassing for some. If you find yourself visiting the restroom more frequently, experience pressure or heaviness in the pelvic or genital region or forced to wear pads to protect yourself from urinary leakage, you are not alone. Conditions that affect that pelvic region, such as urinary incontinence, lower back pain or hip pain and erectile dysfunction are more common than you think and can happen to anyone. Learn how pelvic floor physical therapy can help.
What Is Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy?
Pelvic floor physical therapy is specialty physical therapy to target the internal muscles that control bowel and bladder function, support for pelvic organs, sphincter control and aide in sexual function. Everyone has a pelvic floor, as it is the muscle group that supports our pelvic organs. Both men and women equally will benefit from pelvic floor physical therapy.
What Are the Benefits Of Pelvic Floor Therapy?
Common conditions that can benefit from pelvic physical therapy include:
- Urinary leakage
- Frequent urination/uncontrollable urge
- Constipation
- Bowel incontinence
- Pain during and after pregnancy
- Pain with pelvic exams/tampons/intercourse
- Pelvic pain/pressure
- Erectile dysfunction
- Tailbone/lower back pain/hip pain
What Does A Pelvic Floor Therapist Do?
Pelvic floor physical therapists have additional training and certifications to be able to properly and professionally assess these muscles, and design individualized exercise regimens to meet each patient’s needs.
What To Expect At Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy?
At the conclusion of the evaluation, your pelvic floor physical therapist will discuss treatment options with you depending on your signs and symptoms. On average, pelvic physical therapy begins with physical therapy visits 2-4 times a week. Different treatment options will be performed at each visit and may include:
- Exercises to strengthen the pelvic floor
- Core strengthening exercises
- Soft tissue mobilization and myofascial release
- Joint mobilizations
- Relaxation techniques to address muscle tightness
- Hip/lower extremity strengthening
- Lifestyle education to further address symptoms
Why Choose Us?
During your first visit, you will have the opportunity to share your story, your symptoms and your concerns. We will also discuss the examination process, providing an opportunity to answer any questions.
The examination will include a general movement analysis of your low back and your hips as well as strength of the muscles of this region. Specific tests may be performed for further information gathering.
If deemed necessary and following your consent, an assessment of your pelvic floor musculature completed internally (through the rectum or the vagina) may be performed. You will always have the option to agree or decline any part of the examination. You have the right/option to have a support person with you at all times.
