Accessibility Statement

We are committed to providing a website that is accessible to the widest possible audience. To do so, we are actively working with consultants to update the website by increasing its accessibility and usability by persons who use assistive technologies such as automated tools, keyboard-only navigation, and screen readers.

We are working to have the website conform to the relevant standards of the Section 508 Web Accessibility Standards developed by the United States Access Board, as well as the World Wide Web Consortium's (W3C) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1. These standards and guidelines explain how to make web content more accessible for people with disabilities. We believe that conformance with these standards and guidelines will help make the website more user friendly for all people.

Our efforts are ongoing. While we strive to have the website adhere to these guidelines and standards, it is not always possible to do so in all areas of the website. If, at any time, you have specific questions or concerns about the accessibility of any particular webpage, please contact WebsiteAccess@tenethealth.com so that we may be of assistance.

Thank you. We hope you enjoy using our website.

Transoral Incisionless Fundoplication (TIF®)

TIF is a procedure that treats gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), whose symptoms include heartburn and acid reflux—or regurgitation of food. GERD is a chronic condition caused by changes in the gastroesophageal valve (GEV) that allow acid to flow back from the stomach into the esophagus.

Hiatal hernias are commonly found to contribute to reflux symptoms. This procedure can reduce a hiatal hernia and helps rebuild the valve between the stomach and the esophagus, restoring the natural anatomy to prevent GERD.

Coastal Carolina Hospital is the first hospital in the Lowcountry to perform a TIF procedure.

How Does the TIF Procedure Work?

The TIF procedure is performed by inserting a small camera and small surgical instruments through the patient’s mouth down to the stomach. Using this approach, there are no abdominal incisions and no visible scars. This minimizes complications and allows for rapid recovery.

  • The surgeon uses special fasteners to rebuild the anti-reflux valve and restore the body’s natural protection against acid reflux.
  • Rebuilding the valve restores the body’s natural protection against acid reflux which allows patients to gain long-term relief from GERD symptoms without being dependent on medical therapy.

Who Should Get the TIF Procedure?

If you’ve been diagnosed with GERD, acid reflux disease or laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR), you could be a candidate for the TIF procedure. Talk with your doctor to see if this minimally invasive procedure is right for you.

What Are the Benefits of the TIF Procedure?

Several key benefits can make getting the TIF procedure a more desirable option than conventional surgery. Benefits include:

  • No external incisions
  • No scarring
  • No internal cutting of the natural anatomy
  • More rapid recovery
  • Fewer adverse events and complications than other surgical options
  • Doesn’t limit future treatment options
