Patrick's CT Team Leadership Story

Jun 6, 2019

Patrick McCants, CT tech, Coastal Carolina Hospital

“It’s very family-oriented and everybody knows you.” Born and raised in Florida, Patrick McCants has worked as a CT tech at Coastal Carolina Hospital for nine years. His daily routine varies depending on the specific needs of the community.

“My typical day is non-stop from the time I hit the door at 7:00 until I leave at 3:30,” he says. “Outpatients, ER, inpatients – a little variety of everything. There’s never a way to plan for a typical day.”

Sustaining the drive and focus necessary for his daily tasks can be difficult, but Patrick is motivated by the foundation of support and encouragement that he receives from his patients and fellow staff members.

“I live in Savannah, but I choose to drive here,” he says. “Coastal Carolina is a great place to work. It’s very family-oriented and everybody knows you. There’s never a day, no matter how busy it is, that you can’t laugh or smile. At some point during that eight hours, you’re going to smile once or laugh once or see somebody that you know.”

Recognized as a hero

patrickmccants05-2015-(3)Patrick is a former recipient of the Tenet Hero award, an acknowledgement of his kindness and generosity both inside and outside the hospital. Tenet Heroes are individuals who have done extraordinary things for patients and their colleagues, and for the facilities and communities in which they work.

One experience in particular has inspired Patrick to help those less fortunate.

“There was a little boy in Savannah that was attacked by a pit bull, and his face was badly injured,” he says. “I spent the day with him and his brother and took them to Target and bought them PlayStations. It was very rewarding. They had never been to Target and they had never been able to pick out toys.”

A positive attitude is the cornerstone of leadership and Patrick has an exemplary record of giving to the community. As the owner of a salon in nearby Richmond Hill, Ga., he invites some of his stylists to visit the hospital to give patients pink hair extensions in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

“There’s a large basket of goodies including flat-irons, hair products and OPI polish and we do a drawing for it,” he says. “We donate all that money to Susan G. Komen Low Country affiliate.”

Patrick feels a deep sense of commitment and responsibility for the future of his community. At Coastal Carolina Hospital, he serves alongside a team of dedicated professionals in a patient-friendly facility that offers advanced health care through a variety of surgeries, procedures and treatments.

“When you compare the technology that we have, it’s very similar to the technology at other hospitals, with state-of-the-art equipment and with a great staff,” he says. “We do many of the procedures that could be done at a major hospital. I think our community realizes the patient care they get here and how we treat them and how we value them. Some patients are very apprehensive about going to the hospital, but if you explain to them what to expect and talk them through it, it makes things a lot smoother.”
