Hilton Head Regional Medical Center announced today that it has taken important steps to enhance quality of patient care and the practice of nursing. Over the next 24 months Hilton Head Regional Medical Center will roll out Commitment to Quality. This new program includes a series of targeted initiatives designed to bring about significant improvements in the areas of patient safety, nursing practice, medical staff governance, and other important areas related to the delivery of quality care.
Commitment to Quality addresses four performance themes:
Promoting Patient Safety and Reporting Results
Supporting Physician Excellence
Improving the Practice, Resourcing and Leadership of Nursing
Facilitating Patient Flow and Care Delivery to Create Operational Efficiency.

Patient Safety & Reporting Results
This initiative is designed to leverage systems and management leadership to improve the safety of clinical care for patients, promote evidence-based practices and build programs to support the same.
Hospital reporting systems will be redesigned to coordinate, measure and track key quality indicators and regularly communicate key performance indicators to external agencies (e.g., JCAHO, AHA, CMS).
This initiative, led by Hilton Head Regional Medical Center’s Department of Clinical Quality, is designed to create and implement a set of standard policies and procedures for governing medical staff. This initiative will promote a consistent model of governance and medical staff structure that supports quality of care, patient safety and documentation of physician excellence.
This initiative is designed to make Hilton Head Regional Medical Center the Employer of Choice in nursing through a series of targeted initiatives. Among the most significant will be developing new approaches to nursing care delivery to patients.
This initiative is designed to streamline, reduce variability and coordinate daily patient flow and clinical operations to improve the care delivery process.
Hilton Head Regional Medical Center will study the care delivery process and work to implement operational improvements and efficiencies to manage capacity and prevent delays, promoting enhanced patient, physician and staff satisfaction.
In addition to Commitment to Quality, Hilton Head Regional Medical Center earlier announced that it will collaborate on two major industry initiatives designed to advance quality care and improve patient safety at the nation’s hospitals. Hilton Head Regional Medical Center will participate in a voluntary quality initiative launched by the American Hospital Association, the Association of American Medical Colleges and the Federation of American Hospitals. Hospitals will collect and share with consumers the results of its performance in 10 quality measures for three medical conditions – acute myocardial infarction (heart attack), congestive heart failure and pneumonia. In addition, Hilton Head Regional Medical Center will take part in the 2003 survey sponsored by The Leapfrog Group, a consortium of more than 140 public and private organizations that provide health care benefits.
