Hospitals Announce Agreement with BCBS of South Carolina 

Jan. 5, 2010 Hilton Head Hospital and Coastal Carolina Hospital announced today that they reached a multi-year agreement with BlueCross and BlueShield of South Carolina, which became effective January 1, 2010.  The new agreement also covers eight physicians employed by the two hospitals.  Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

“We are pleased to continue providing service to members of the BlueCross and BlueShield network at our hospitals,” said Mark O’Neil Jr., chief executive officer of Hilton Head Hospital. “Both of our hospitals provide residents of the Low Country with access to a wide array of quality health care services.”

Elizabeth Hammond, Blue Cross’ chief spokesman said, “We’re pleased to continue to maintain our good long-term relationship with Hilton Head Hospital, Coastal Carolina Hospital and their physicians and to have them in our network. We and all of our network partners are committed to keeping costs in check for our members in South Carolina.”

Hilton Head Hospital was ranked by HealthGrades in 2009 as being among the top 10 in South Carolina for cardiac surgery, coronary interventional procedures, gastroenterology (GI) surgery and gastroenterology medical treatment. The hospital also was recognized by HealthGrades as being in the top five percent in the nation for GI surgery. Hilton Head Hospital recently received the American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines® (GWTG) Performance Achievement Awards –Gold for Coronary Artery Disease Gold and Silver for Heart Failure.

Coastal Carolina Hospital is accredited by The Joint Commission and recently became a participant in Get With The Guidelines® (GWTG), the premier hospital-based quality improvement program for the American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association. Coastal Carolina Hospital is a 41-bed acute care hospital located at the intersection of Interstate 95 and Highway 278 in Hardeeville, S. C. The hospital has been serving the medical and health care needs of Jasper and Beaufort counties since November 2004.
