Hilton Head Regional Medical Center's Main Laboratory has been awarded an accreditation by the Commission on Laboratory Accreditation of the College of American Pathologists (CAP), based on the results of a recent on-site inspection.

The laboratory's director, Charles Lucas, MD was advised of this national recognition and congratulated for the "excellence of the services provided."  Hilton Head Regional Medical Center Laboratory is one of more than 6,000 CAP-accredited laboratories nationwide.

During the CAP accreditation process, inspectors examine the laboratory's records and quality control of procedures for the preceding two years.  CAP inspectors also examine the entire staff's qualifications, the laboratory's equipment, facilities, safety program and record, as well as the overall management of the laboratory.  This stringent inspection program is designed to specifically promote the highest standard of care for the laboratory's patients.

The College of American Pathologists is a medical society serving nearly 16,000 physician members and the laboratory community throughout the world.  It is the world's largest association composed exclusively of pathologists and is widely considered the leader in laboratory assurance.  The CAP is an advocate for high-quality and cost-effective medical care.

Medical Center Laboratory Identified as Best Performer

The College of American Pathologists (CAP) identified the Laboratory at Hilton Head Regional Medical Center a Best Performer in their Q-TRACKS program.

Q-TRACKS assists laboratories with determining effectiveness of laboratory policies/procedures, opening communication doors, justifying staffing resources and managing change.  Q-TRACKS monitors provide objective benchmarks against which your laboratory can measure performance, determine areas that require improvement, and implement change.

Serving the laboratory community for more than half a century, CAP has used its knowledge and commitment to excellence and quality to develop specialized laboratory benchmarking programs. The College of American Pathologists will share Hilton Head Regional Medical Center's Laboratory Best Performers summary information with all Q-TRACKS participants in an effort to improve the quality of their operations.
