Medical Center Announces Name Change

Hilton Head Medical Center and Clinics is making a small change that heralds an enormous difference. As of January 1, 2003, our name will be Hilton Head Regional Medical Center.

"As we grow and expand to meet the healthcare needs of Beaufort and Jasper counties and of the many people who need our services while visiting from elsewhere, we felt it would be appropriate to have a name that reflects our services," said Dennis R. Bruns, CEO and president. "We dropped 'clinics' from our name because we no longer employ physicians who operated various practices and clinical services for the hospital. We added 'regional' because of the scope of services we provide and the region we serve."

The Medical Center's board of governors and its administration considered the name change earlier this year as part of its business planning process. The board approved the name in August, with plans for it to take effect in January.

This is the third name for Medical Center in its 27-year history. When it opened in 1975, it was called Hilton Head Hospital. In 1995, it was changed to Hilton Head Medical Center and Clinics.

Through the years, the Medical Center has grown to offer more advanced care. It recently added the Heart Center that would provide open-heart surgery and replaced medical equipment with up-to-date models, including a multi-slice CT Scanner and in September will add magnetic resonance imaging, which would give more precise images to help diagnose medical problems. The Medical Center is currently undergoing a $1.6 million capital expansion that includes the addition of a second catheterization lab and two more operating rooms. The cath lab is scheduled to open in the spring. Construction on the two operating rooms is expected to begin later in 2003. In the new year, the Medical Center will also expand its Women's Center to provide advanced pediatric care.

"These expansions are just part of our on-going projects that we started two years ago," Bruns said. "In that phase, we expanded our emergency department, added a new intensive care unit, opened a Women's Center and completed some other renovation to upgrade our hospital. For a small, 93-bed hospital, we have made tremendous strides."

Hilton Head Regional Medical Center is one of 113 hospitals affiliated with Tenet Healthcare Corporation, based in Santa Barbara, Ca. The 93-bed hospital is located on Hilton Head Island. It operates the Bluffton-Okatie Outpatient Surgery Center in Bluffton.
